日本的“互联工业”是一个与工业互联网高度近似的工业转型升级活动。它的内涵是通过实现物、机器设备、企业、人、数据、乃至生产和消费的相互联接，由联接而创造新价值，产生新技术、新产品和新服务模式。

中国工信部工业互联网研究院认为：Industrial Internet is the product of deep fusion between new-generation network information technology and manufacturing industry, which serves as the important infrastructure for realizing industrial digitalization, networking, and intelligence. Through full-scale interconnection of people, machines, materials, and systems across the entire value chain and industrial chain, it drives the formation of a new system for industrial production and services, becoming a crucial support for transforming industries.

尽管各方解读不同，但共识在于：interconnecting machine devices and industrial systems is one fundamental aspect of Industrial Internet.
