Abstract:
As we delve into the mysteries of solar flares and their impact on our planet's climate, two prevailing theories—magnetic reconnection and magnetic fluid waves—present unique challenges for current research. While magnetic reconnection offers a high-energy solution in theory, its spatial and temporal scales are beyond the reach of existing ground-based telescopes. On the other hand, magnetic fluid waves offer a larger spatial scale but lower energy release rates that fail to meet the energy requirements for solar flare heating.
This study presents groundbreaking observations from Goode Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory that reveal previously unknown horizontal oscillations within sunspots' penumbrae fibers. These oscillations trigger persistent lateral field fluctuations with no significant decay over time. Using advanced magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations and theoretical calculations based on these findings, we demonstrate an extraordinary energy flow rate of approximately $7.52 \times 10^6$ W/m² in this region—a mere fraction of which would be sufficient to power solar flare heating.
Our research explores new avenues for understanding solar flares through large ground-based telescopes like those at China's Yunnan Observatory (http://www.ynao.cas.cn/xwzx/xstg/) while also shedding light on long-standing questions about energy transfer between chromosphere layers during intense events such as coronal mass ejections or X-ray bursts.
